Safe Alternative to Smoking?

Is there a safe alternative to smoking? The answer is no. Smoking tobacco, in all forms, is deadly.

Recently, there has been an upsurge of people, in particular college age students; who believe this alternative can be found in hookahs. Hookahs are water pipes used to smoke a blend of tobacco and exotic fruits. The smoke is filtered through a water pipe which makes inhaling the smoke “smoother". The common misconception is that toxins are filtered out through the water. This is untrue. The average person who uses a hookah will inhale almost 10 times the amount of smoke in one puff than they would with one puff of a cigarette. The truth of the matter is there is no safe way to smoke tobacco.

There will be a short presentation on hookahs at the Monday, September 28th Allamakee County Tobacco-Free Coalition meeting. The meeting will be held at Gus & Tony’s Restaurant beginning at noon. All Allamakee County residents are invited to attend coalition meetings.
